Sisters Give Wedding Dresses New Life
When Carla Rivera decided to sell her wedding dress, she found the process more difficult than expected. She tried Craiglist and Ebay, but struggled with making a sale. With her sister a recent bride, as well, the two began thinking-wouldn’t it be great if there was a place where selling a wedding dress was easy? Together, the two developed Bridal Project, a consignment wedding gown shop that lets brides-to-be find the dress of their dreams for a fraction of the cost and gives past brides a buyer for their gowns.“I don’t know of anyone else who is doing it,” Rivera said. “We thought it would be really cool.”
While some brides use the shop to sell their dresses, others come in search of used gowns, veils, hairpieces and shoes. In addition to aiding brides in the buying and selling of dresses, Rivera thought opening a business primarily used by brides and brides-to-be would make for a warm and happy work environment. She looks back fondly on her own experience searching for a wedding dress.“When I was shopping from my own wedding dress…everyone was happy,” she said. “It was just such a cool experience, and we thought it must be so nice working at a wedding shop.”
In addition to brides, third party merchant account, Rivera also helps local designers. She reached out to designers and Bay Area fashion school professors in search of young designers looking for a shot.“My main goal is just to help out up-and-coming designers,” Rivera said. She recognizes the difficulty of making a name in the design world, and that sometimes designers just need that first opportunity. Additionally, their designs allow future brides to purchase one-of-a-kind dresses.More than that, however, Rivera said the designers are all local, creating their own garments and jewelry.“I think that’s one thing that will differentiate us,” she said. “We can support the local economy in that way.”
Rivera said she chose Burlingame because of its attractive downtown. She found a place on Craiglist at 319 Primrose Road and said the owner loved the concept of Bridal Project. The store is now open for consigners and expects to begin serving brides-to-be within a couple of weeks.

Experience in the field
Experience in the field is obviously necessary. I’ve been a fight trainer and fitness trainer for 12 years. I was a hard-core athlete since the age of 12. Without being exposed to hundreds of different kinds of training and feeling each of them, I couldn’t possibly relate to my students. For example, when I teach a yoga technique, I make it clear that I understand what my trainee is going through. “Ignore the burning feeling in your groin, and breathe deeply into the tension in your back that results from this posture.” They understand that I’ve been there before, and that I’ve pushed through exactly the same barriers that they face. This not only cultivates trust, it shows that you know what you’re talking about!
Passion is something that simply can’t be taught. As a fight trainer, I CAN’T STAND IT when my students throw sloppy punches. I yell and scream like a maniac! I will make them perform the same punch over and over in slow motion until they do it correctly… I don’t care if it takes 1000 repetitions! You can’t teach someone how to care about the results of their students. Many are happy to just say, “Good job! Niiiiice rep!” Then they take their money and go home, having given you little more than a pep talk. When it comes to lifting weights, you’re going to get some results regardless of your form. You could also just head out to your back yard and lift a rock over your head and get something out of it. When it comes to technique oriented instruction, third party merchant account, you really need someone who gives a crap about performance.
I have a salsa dancing coach named Katie, and she’s fantastic. Part of that is her love for dance in addition to her love of passing it on. She can pick out the smallest flaws in my form and correct them. Subsequently, my hips then sashay out of control… until she tells me that I look too feminine and corrects that issue. The bottom line is that to be a great trainer or teacher of any sort, you have to truly care that your student is able to develop as a practitioner. The first time that I don’t care about the power behind one of my students kicks, I’m going to retire.
