Overview of Rolex Oysterdate
Before we go into discussion about the Rolex models, we believe it would be better to share some background about the Rolex Oyster. Some are not aware that Oyster is the name of the waterproof watch case that most Rolex feature, not an actual watch model per se.
How much do you know Oyster?
Oyster was actually the first successful waterproof case for a wristwatch, patented by Rolex in 1926. At that time, the development to have a waterproof and dustproof watch was a miracle. The comparison between Rolex Oysterdate and Datejust is the crown frame. Rolex Datejust can be recognized by grooves on its frame, on the other side Rolex Oyster’s is clean and smooth.
The Development of Oyster
At the early development stage, the Oyster series used self winding movement, as this Rolex series evolved , the movement has changed to automatic. As far as we know, most of the Rolex Oysterdate movement had no chronometer. Only later model of Rolex Oyster has chronometer.
You should wear you Rolex Regularly
You should wear your Rolex watch often as it will keep the watch in perfect running condition. By doing so, it helps the viscosity of the lubricants in the movement. If not , these lubricants may harden, which causes friction within the movement. As a result, this friction could damage the functioning of the movement. If you do not wear your Rolex regularly, one way to overcome this problem is to wind it every week. This will keep the watch gears moving, thus preventing the lubricants from hardening and maintaining accurate timekeeping.
Wind your Rolex
Most Rolex watches are self-winding. Generally, Rolex watches have a power reserve of 48 hours. If not wound after 48 hours, your Rolex might stop running. Is this case, you should wind your watch manually. Simply unscrew the crown to position 2 and wind it about 30 to 40 times. After you have done this, put the crown back down and continue to use your watch as normal.
