Why Baseball Is Your Life

I’m sixty years old and probably have more hard miles on this poor old body than most 60 year old men, yet when talk of baseball begins I can’t help but feel 12 years old again. I’ve had some people, ones that don’t really know my true motivation, ask how I stay so enthusiastic about baseball. Why’s it so important to me?

Excuse me, but to me that question rates in the top ten of the most stupid questions I’ve been asked in my life. The question posed should be, why is baseball so important in my life, and to that query I’ll offer a few answers.

To begin with baseball is a game which you can love your entire life. As with any other kid growing up in a typical suburban neighborhood in the 1950′s and 60′s, the combined kids on two or three adjacent streets played games outside from sun up till sundown during the summer.

As youngsters we were quite creative playing games such as marbles, kick ball, hide & seek, canada goose, tag, we’d build forts from card board boxes, catch honey bees and store them in a glass jar, chase fireflies, the boys played with toy soldiers while girls had tea with their dolls and we played baseball.

As we grew in age and maturity our interests changed. We no longer built card board forts nor chased honey bees and fireflies and the toy soldiers and dolls were only important to us if they were collectibles with monetary value. But… we still played baseball.

As we aged we joined organized baseball where we could feel like a real major league player, as we wore uniforms, cap brims correctly bent and who can forget the absolutely coolest sound of steal spikes crossing parking lot pavement.

The importance of learning and performing the skills of playing baseball continued to increase as we reached junior high school through varsity high school level. The competition, the camaraderie of team mates, the opportunity to show off for our girlfriend and the drive of perfecting our skills never diminished. Baseball was important.

As a young man I now took the reins of a youth baseball team and was determined to teach the skills I had acquired over the years. Ironically, I was the one who learned the first lesson of the season.

I was given an established team, with the exceptions of my son and 1 other player, the boys had played together for three years. I must admit, I drove them hard during pre-season practices, but I saw the undeveloped talent these kids possessed and I was determined to bring it out of them. They responded well and I was quite confident, although anxious, as we played our first season game. We lost. We also lost the second and the third game and I was beside myself.
