Sisters Give Wedding Dresses New Life
When Carla Rivera decided to sell her wedding dress, she found the process more difficult than expected. She tried Craiglist and Ebay, but struggled with making a sale.With her sister a recent bride, as well, the two began thinking-wouldn’t it be great if there was a place where selling a wedding dress was easy? Together, the two developed Bridal Project, a consignment wedding gown shop that lets brides-to-be find the dress of their dreams for a fraction of the cost and gives past brides a buyer for their gowns.“I don’t know of anyone else who is doing it,” Rivera said. “We thought it would be really cool.”
While some brides use the shop to sell their dresses, others come in search of used gowns, veils, hairpieces and shoes. In addition to aiding brides in the buying and selling of dresses, Rivera thought opening a business primarily used by brides and brides-to-be would make for a warm and happy work environment. She looks back fondly on her own experience searching for a wedding dress.“When I was shopping from my own wedding dress…everyone was happy,” she said. “It was just such a cool experience, and we thought it must be so nice working at a wedding shop.”
In addition to brides,third party merchant account, Rivera also helps local designers. She reached out to designers and Bay Area fashion school professors in search of young designers looking for a shot.“My main goal is just to help out up-and-coming designers,” Rivera said.She recognizes the difficulty of making a name in the design world, and that sometimes designers just need that first opportunity. Additionally, their designs allow future brides to purchase one-of-a-kind dresses.More than that, however, Rivera said the designers are all local, creating their own garments and jewelry.“I think that’s one thing that will differentiate us,” she said. “We can support the local economy in that way.”
Rivera said she chose Burlingame because of its attractive downtown. She found a place on Craiglist at 319 Primrose Road and said the owner loved the concept of Bridal Project.The store is now open for consigners and expects to begin serving brides-to-be within a couple of weeks.

It’s a look that required confidence ― and it’s a good thing Margulies, who told E! she picked her dress late Saturday night, has that.
“If you watch the clothes she’s worn since coming back to the red carpet with The Good Wife, you’ll see she makes incredibly sophisticated choices and she doesn’t walk around asking 175 people for their opinions,” said InStyle’s fashion director, Hal Rubenstein, about Margulies. “She always looks like herself. There’s something very grown-up and intelligent about her.”
The early online buzz was about Michele’s sophisticated Marchesa dress: She wore the look of a seasoned star instead of starlet. She wore a plain-front, low draped back with rosette sleeves that really let her work the crowd. She gave fans lined up outside the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles a big wink.

GOP lawyers veto court cameras in same-sex case
Lawyers for House Republicans have vetoed a federal judge’s proposal to allow cameras in the courtroom during arguments in San Francisco next month over insurance coverage for same-sex couples.The Oct. 21 hearing would have been the first in the Bay Area to be recorded and posted online for public viewing under a pilot project announced by U.S. court administrators in June for 14 federal districts, including the San Francisco-based Northern District of California.
But the proposal by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White, an appointee of President George W. Bush, needed approval from all parties in the case. The plaintiff, a court employee seeking benefits for her wife, and the Justice Department both consented, but lawyers for the Republican-controlled House of Representatives told White on Friday that their client “prefers not to participate.” They did not elaborate.
The House entered the case after President Obama withdrew Justice Department legal support from the Defense of Marriage Act, a 1996 law that denies federal benefits to same-sex spouses. The San Francisco suit, one of several challenging that law, was filed by Karen Golinski, who is seeking family insurance coverage for the woman she married in 2008.
Golinski’s lawyer,Diesel Generator, Tara Borelli of the gay-rights group Lambda Legal, said Monday it was “outrageous that the leadership of the U.S. House of Representatives wants to shroud in secrecy their use of tax dollars to try to defend discrimination.”She noted that no witnesses would take part in the hearing, in which the opposing lawyers will argue over the constitutionality of the 1996 law. The losing side is likely to appeal White’s ruling to the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which telecasts hearings in major cases without having to ask the parties for consent.

‘Wind, water and sky’
A unique vision of the wholeness of nature has led a local artist to create a range of works that will be shown in an upcoming exhibit at the Emporia Arts Center.
Michael James Allen, whose exhibit, “Wind, Water and Sky” opens at 5 p.m. Thursday, said his work aims to pull these three elements together and relate them to the human body. He designs his compositions in thirds, which he sees as a kind of magical number.
“It’s like trying to assimilate a human body with a landscape,” he said. “I think the reason thirds work with the human body is because two-thirds of a body is water, and we identify with the same likenesses.”
Allen has been painting most of his life. As a child he earned a scholarship to the Hollywood Art Institute in Hollywood, Fla. where he studied for three years. After his family moved to Kansas, he studied at Kansas State University and Fort Hays State University before earning a bachelor’s from Emporia State University. He taught high school art before starting a successful advertising career, from which he retired to paint full-time.
Using the principals of feng shui and concepts of string theory and fluid dynamics, Allen works to show through landscapes the relationship between natural elements and the human body.
“I want to pull together those numbers and that shape and try to relate it to a human being, because I want you to look at it and understand that we’re all the same thing, we’re moving through space, and the only difference between this and me is the pulse, the heartbeat,” he said.
Allen was chosen as one of the top artists in the Midwest during the state’s recent sesquicentennial celebration and was published in the book, “State of the Arts.” His exhibit at the arts center will be his first in 30 years.
Using oil paints and a traditional style, Allen said he uses the same materials and techniques as the classical masters did. He aims to pull together the elements to assimilate a body in thirds, creating a subliminal attraction
“String theory, feng shui, all that stuff, this is how I try to pull all that together,” he said. “When you look at these leaves you should see the flicker,Insulator, the wind, and it’s caught in that moment.
The concept came to him, he said, as he was hiking in Colorado.
“When you’re out in the country and you see that kind of thing — the sun’s in one position, the wind is blowing in a certain way, there’s a certain atmosphere and a certain heat of the day �� that’s always something you’re going to see,” he said. “It’s not going to seem that way exactly again. That’s what I was trying to achieve, to try to stop that moment.”
