The Monday After: Restoring Ida’s dresses
Ida McKinley’s dresses have gotten a little frayed during the century since the first lady wore them.”She loved embellishment and that has consequences,” said Kimberly Kenney, curator at Wm. McKinley Presidential Library & Museum, which has in its collection 20 dresses that are authenticated as having been worn by McKinley’s wife.”We have issues with beads falling off and embroidery unraveling,” said Kenney. “A lot of them are from New York dressmakers — they’re good quality.”The garments are just old.Now the McKinley museum’s auxiliary is trying to turn back the hands of time. The group is engaged in a long-term project to raise funds to restore and preserve the McKinley dresses.
“This was Cindy Sober’s idea,” said Ginny Miller, auxiliary president. “She presented the idea and we thought this is something we wanted to do for the museum.”Sober, the Museum Shoppe manager and a member of the auxiliary, had noted that few dresses were in good enough shape to be displayed last year at the museum’s anniversary dinner.”Cindy remembered that I had gotten dresses out and wasn’t able to use all of them,” said Kenney. “It took bringing several out to find three I could put on mannequins.”Kenney said that since there are few of the dresses she feels secure in displaying, “those are getting overused.” The rest stay boxed — away from light and in constant temperature — in the museum’s conservation room.
“It breaks my heart that I’m the only one who can see these dresses,” said Kenney. “I feel privileged, but you want to be able to show them to the public.”Miller and Kenney estimated it will cost about $5,000 per dress to restore and preserve each of the Ida McKinley dresses.”This is not a project that is going away soon,” said Miller. “It’s going to be around for awhile.”The high cost of restoration is in part due to the numerous embellishments on the dresses. The high number of dresses in disrepair is largely a result of Ida McKinley’s choice of fabric.”Silk has always been high fashion but it’s fragile,” explained Kenney. “These dresses are at this point more than 110 years old. That’s really asking a lot of silk.”Kenney noted that much of the deterioration of the dresses likely occurred in the decades immediately following Ida McKinley’s death.”She died in 1907 and our organization (Stark County Historical Society) wasn’t formed until 1946,” she explained. “That’s a lot of time for them to be in an environment not designed for artifacts.”

Family Day, Munger Road Clothing Drive and More
Fun Fact: Family Day was started on Sept. 26, 2001 by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University. This holiday encourages parents to “eat dinner with your children” because the frequent family sit-down encourages conversation, which can be an effective way to keep kids free from drug abuse.
Three city parking lots will be closed for improvements this week and are scheduled to reopen on Oct. 4. The Ambrose Lot on the southwest corner of Route 64 and Route 31, the River Plaza Lot on the west side of Route 31 between Cedar and State Streets and two square gravel areas adjacent to North Riverside Avenue, will be patched and resurfaced.

Items for discussion include; a District 303 Performance Scorecard, revisiting summit 303 and the attendance of high school students at board/committee meetings. The Village of Campton Hills is inviting local residents, business owners, community leaders, and other stakeholders to attend a special community planning event aiming to update the village’s Comprehensive Plan. The meeting will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Wasco Elementary School, 4N782 School Street, Campton Hills.
The Comprehensive Plan will help guide land use, community character, natural resources, open spaces, housing, transportation and economic development. The City of St. Charles and Charlestowne 18 Movie Theaters will hold a winter clothing drive in conjunction with the release and showing of the movie Munger Road. Drop-off boxes in the St. Charles Municipal Center and at the theaters�� main lobby service desk will collect donations of new and gently worn winter clothing for children and adults through Oct. 10.

After seeing the thriving consignment business, she said a new business model came into focus.More than 1,400 people have brought in items to sell on consignment at her store. Guest at Wedding Arrested for Stealing from Purses During Reception
A Yonkers woman was arrested Saturday on a felony larceny charge after guests at a wedding called the police and accused the woman of stealing credit cards, cash, make-up and a cell phone from their purses during the reception. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office received the complaint regarding the thefts at about 10 p.m. Oct. 22.Deputy John Cihanek responded to the Lake Peekskill Community Center, where the reception was being held, to conduct the initial investigation. Upon his arrival, Deputy Cihanek was met by guests attending the party who pointed out a woman whom they suspected of being responsible for the thefts.
The case was referred to Investigators James Babcock and John Alfano of the Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Their investigation resulted in the recovery of the stolen items and the arrest of 54 year-old Elsa Rivera of 33 Lockwood Avenue, Yonkers. She was charged with Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree, a class “E” felony. Rivera was arraigned before Putnam Valley Town Justice Gina Capone and remanded to the Putnam County Correctional Facility in lieu of $15,000 cash bail.
After consulting with the Putnam County District Attorney’s Office, Investigator Babcock will lodge nine additional counts of Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree and two counts of Petit Larceny, a class “A” misdemeanor against Rivera.If convicted of any count of the Grand Larceny charge, Rivera may be sentenced to a term of incarceration for up to four years in a New York State correctional facility as determined by a court.

So, I guess we can’t go looking for parenting models in the fashion industry. Or in the world of sports either, all you pee-wee sports coaches who dress your little boys up like the Yankees or the Redskins.
The take-away message for parents of young children has to be: Do what you can to slow this growing-up to a crawl. No cellphones and Facebook pages for ‘tweens. No T-ball batting cages for 4-year-olds. No pole-dancing classes for little girls. No high heels for toddlers.
